The Project

This semester, the students in COMM 322 were put into groups of 5 or 6.  Each group chose a community partner in Muncie and/or Delaware County who needed and wanted help with video messaging.  They worked with that community partner to create a 2-5 minute video that the organization can use to attract customers, volunteers, donations, etc.  The top videos (as voted on by the class and decided on by the instructor) will be screened at the One Video, One Vision fundraiser on December 4th.  At the fundraiser, those in attendance will vote with their dollars on the best video.  The winning video will receive a cash donation to their organization and the distinction of being the COMMUNICATION AND POPULAR CULTURE TOP VIDEO of Fall 2014.

The Class

COMM 322 examines mediated, popular culture through a rhetorical theory and criticism lens.  In the beginning of the semester, the students approach popular culture from a scholarly perspective.  They talk through theoretical ideas and ground their understanding of popular culture message in rhetorical theory.  They place themselves within culture by analyzing popular culture artifacts and discussing ways society can use popular culture to influence political change.  Because this class is an immersive opportunity, they have the chance to put what they learn about messaging, circulation and community into practice by working with a community partner and creating a video asset and social media campaign for them. The students in COMM 322 are thrilled to have an opportunity to use what they’ve learned in a “real world” capacity.
